Property assessments and the County BoardNovember 6, 2008 State Senator30th District Waukegan Highland Park Park City In response to a letter to the editor published by The News-Sun on Oct. 25, I want to respond to a claim made regarding the assessment of property by Lake County. Although the Lake County Board does not assess property directly, it can have an impact on the amount of property taxes you pay. In the state Senate, I have twice sponsored legislation approved by the General Assembly to provide real property tax relief to homeowners. Public Act 95-664, approved in October 2007, gave every county in Illinois the opportunity to provide a greater homeowner exemption amount, which meant mitigating assessment rate increases and significant property tax relief for homeowners. Yet, given the opportunity to help Lake County homeowners, our County Board failed to act. In fact, the County Board members did the citizens of Lake County a great disservice by not taking up the measure for consideration at all. Instead, they chose to sit on their hands. Property tax burdens have become too great for most homeowners. While the County Board does not assess your property, the board members still have the authority to act on rising property tax bills. I believe it is their obligation to do so. Terry Link |
