While the election is over, I am pleased to announce that on January 1, 2011, Jasmine's Law
became effective under P.A. 96-1390. Jasmine's Law strengthens Illinois criminal code to
double the prison sentence for child sex offenders. Currently, we are working to help pass
HB1237, known as the Survivor Rights Act. Under HB1237, crime victims will receive their
rights at the time they file a report with any law enforcement officer, have access to a
mediator who will have the authority to remedy any violation of a crime victims' rights,
and provide a civil remedy against any criminal justice agency who willfully and wantonly
violates crime victims' rights.
