![]() While the election is over, there are important things to do. Please read below about Jasmine's Law, stay informed and active. More information and updates are regularly available on www.momsv.org Introduction Illinois Criminal Code (ILCC) in 1961 provided for sentencing related to sex crimes against children. Often through plea deals, reduced charges and lesser sentencing, child sex offenders serve much less than what is accorded by the ILCC. Towards protecting our children, more should be done punitively. Jasmine's Law endeavors to lengthen the amount of time served by offenders through amending the Illinois Criminal Code as it pertains to child sex offenders by increasing the minimum sentencing range. Additionally, crime victims' rights are often ignored during the criminal justice process. Jasmine's Law would mandate a sign-off sheet to enforce victims' rights. Increase minimum sentencing range for child sex crimes Jasmine's law increases the minimum sentencing range on all class felony sex offenses accorded by the Illinois Criminal Code of 1961. Alcohol Involvement Jasmine's Law provides additional sentencing to an offender during the commission or attempted commission of a sexual offense while the minor was under the influence of alcohol. Crime Victims' Rights Sign-Off Sheet Jasmine's Law mandates State's Attorneys provide victims with information and an explanation of their rights under the Crime Victims' Rights Act at the onset of the criminal justice process and obtain a victim's signature on the "sign-off" sheet to acknowledge their receipt of and an explanation of said rights. Summary Enacting Jasmine's Law is a step towards increasing the safety of children from sexual predators in Illinois. The effects on child victims last a lifetime. Therefore commensurate and substantial sentences should be imposed. Jasmine's Law moves sentencing, the protection of children, and the enforcement of crime victims' rights in that direction.
